Two killed, one injured in morning Beltway crash

Two men were killed during yesterday's morning rush hour after a contractor's van crossed the median of Interstate 695, became airborne, and landed on top of a sedan traveling in the opposite direction, Maryland State Police said. The crash occurred in the Eastpoint area of Baltimore County.
The van for J.T. Waterworks Inc. in Essex was traveling on the outer loop of the Beltway near North Point Boulevard about 7 a.m. when it crossed the median and landed on top of a 2001 Oldsmobile sedan on the inner loop, said Sgt. Arthur Betts, a state police spokesman.
The van's driver, Stanley N. Koppenhaver Jr., 27, of Vulcan Road in North Point, and a passenger, Paul S. Patterson, 47, of the 3000 block of Kenyon Ave. in Northeast Baltimore, were ejected from the van and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Oldsmobile, Jonathan Besaw, 42, of the 1800 block of Dunwoody in Parkville, was taken by ambulance to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and was reported in serious condition, police said.
