Scene & Heard
1958 Colts 50th Anniversary
It might not seem surprising that some 2,000 Baltimore football fans would pack the club level of M&T Bank Stadium to see some of their idols. But the players weren't Baltimore Ravens. These were Baltimore Colts - those who had played 50 years ago in the 1958 NFL Championship game against the New York Giants. And none were more surprised by the huge turnout than the players themselves.
Concert Artists of Baltimore
Blue was everywhere but in the moods of the guests at "Rhapsody in Blue: A Salute to the Gershwin Era," the Concert Artists of Baltimore gala. You had huge blue back-lit cutouts of skyscrapers around the edges of the Belvedere ballroom. Tables were draped in blue. And so were some of the guests.
The Contemporary
Is it a contradiction in terms when something is both contemporary and retro? Not if it's the Contemporary Museum's "Mod Holiday Party." Guests pushed through a curtain of beads to enter the main gallery. There, they could sip a whiskey sour and nibble on pigs in blankets, as they gazed at '60s relics such as a portable electric typewriter, a hatbox suitcase and Plexiglas furniture. Perhaps, they might be persuaded by event chairs Susan Amiot and Jessica Dorsey to step inside the party's absinthe lounge to taste the licoricey drink and watch a bit of Goldfinger projected on one wall.
Reginald F. Lewis Museum
A little snow wasn't keeping away supporters for the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture. Hundreds descended upon the Lyric Opera House for the museum's "2008 Annual Gala," a concert by pop legends Ashford & Simpson. Upstairs, VIP guests gathered for a pre-concert VIP party.
Foundation fighting blindness
The mezzanine hall at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel had the look of a good cocktail hour. Lots of cocktail dresses and smiling faces. But, ask the right question, and you could immediately pick up on a certain undertone of trepidation ... a bit of fear about what was ahead.
Pam Shriver's Tennis Classic Auction
The Tremont Grand ballroom was bursting with people and bustling with energy as several hundred guests wined, dined and perused all sorts of silent auction items at Pam Shriver's 23rd annual Charity Tennis Classic Grand Kickoff Reception. Not bad for an event that's been around a lot longer than those it helps support through Greater Baltimore Tennis Patrons and other youth organizations.
Dyslexia tutoring program
Some 350 people packed the Marriott Waterfront hotel's mezzanine for "Wishes, Dreams & Imagination," the sixth-annual fundraising party for Dyslexia Tutoring Program, with almost everyone receiving a personal welcome from the organization's CEO, Marcy K. Kolodny.
Maryland Art Place
Just how does one dress for a fundraising party that has "The Seven Deadly Sins" as its title and theme? If it's for the Maryland Art Place, a little personal creativity comes in handy. For MAP board chair Suzi Cordish, that meant welcoming the evening's guests in a chic cocktail pajama pants outfit.
